My Crossfit adventure started five years ago. My wife and friends convinced me to attend an elements class. The first workout I completed was baseline, with a time of 19:30. I could not do a standard pushup. I suffered, but a fire was lit. I became determined to be healthy. I kept showing up. Six months later I redid the workout in 4:20.

I did not play sports in school because of a lack of skill and access. I was told in middle and high school by a variety of coaches that I wasn’t quite good enough to play. Crossfit has rewired my brain. With modifications and accommodations any skill has an access point. This fundamental part of coaching functional fitness has inspired me to help people access skills and strength that previously they only watched others have or achieve.

I love the community and aspect of Crossfit and am grateful for being welcomed into Crossfit Soto. I coach an after school fitness club, Newport Strong, at Newport High School, where I teach English Language Arts. I am constantly motivated to expand access to a healthy life for everyone in our community.

“Fitness is for everybody. All you have to do is keep showing up!”

CrossFit SOTO Coach since 2018

I have been involved in the health and fitness industry when I began my Exercise Science degree at NKU in 2013, which is also the year I started functional fitness. I graduated with a BS in Exercise Science and worked as an assistant strength and conditioning coach at Griffin Elite Sports and Wellness. I left to pursue a career in the medical field and recently graduated with my BSN from Xavier University. I also hold my level one certifications in CrossFit and well as U.S.A. Weightlifting. I love coaching because every athlete teaches me something new about my coaching style and helps me evolve the way I help you! The community at SOTO has gotten me through all the ups and downs in my life, it’s truly a special place to be.

CrossFit Regionals 2018, Wodapalooza 2019, Strength in Depth 2019, Filthy 150 2019 and Mayhem Classic 2020

My favorite things to focus on with our athletes are Gymnastics movements and Olympic Weightlifting. It is always awesome to see someone get their first Muscle-Up. Outside of coaching I am in graduate school full time at Mount St. Joe to become a Doctor of Physical Therapy. It is a joy to be able to apply what I am learning in school to keeping our athletes moving and feeling their best. I have also been fortunate compete in CrossFit’s Sanctioned events all over the world. I absolutely love competing. It is so much fun to find the limits of what I am capable of, and it never fails to teach me what I can become better at. CrossFit Level 1 Trainer

CrossFit SOTO Coach since 2019

I’m Collin Shadwell and I have been a member of SOTO for over 5 years. After two years of crushing WODs and seeing the benefits of the programming, I decided to start a fitness program at the school where I work. Partnering with my friend, Sarah, we both attained our Level 1 CrossFit Certification and started our affiliate for kids, CrossFit Hustle and Muscle located at Highlands High School. Helping kids see the benefits of maintaining a healthy lifestyle through exercise has been an amazing experience. It also allowed me to see how much I enjoyed coaching. This allowed me to transition smoothly into becoming a coach at SOTO where I try to come to every class with a positive attitude, helpful tips, and an amazing playlist!

CrossFit SOTO Coach since 2020

I have a background in collegiate club soccer. I am an Elements Coach and Class Coach at SOTO Community Fitness. Additionally, I help run Kids Camps and Classes whenever possible. I love coaching because I love getting to see members get out of their comfort zone and push themselves in new ways. Teaching the foundational movements is so fun to help build that confidence and essential layer of skills.

Outside of coaching, I am a graduate student at the University of Cincinnati studying to become a School Psychologist!”

Coaching has given me the amazing opportunity to be apart of someone’s health and fitness journey. I’m able to teach athletes proper and safe movement as well as encourage, support, and push them. The best part of coaching is forming a relationship with the athletes and watching them earn little and big victories along their journey!
